Where is it Wednesday?

Today I had a student who wanted more books by an author she had read last year…but the problem was, she only remembered the author’s first name: Sharon.  I asked her if she remembered the name of the book she read last year.  No luck, but she did remember that there were two books: a dog poetry book and a cat poetry book.  Do you know the author?

That’s right, it’s Sharon Creech!  We found her books and checked them out today!

Google Hang Out and The Hair of Zoe Fleefenbacher

We had a great time in the library today.  We “hung out” with Smith Elementary students today via Google Hangout.  Mrs. Pelias, Smith Elementary librarian, and I took turns reading The Hair of Zoe Fleenfenbacher; it was so much fun to share a story with another school!  After we read the story, students got to design their own crazy hair bookmarks.  Check out our cool artwork!

Storybook Pumpkin Patch

Gather up those pumpkins and craft supplies…it’s time for our annual Storybook Pumpkin Patch!  Choose a favorite book character and decorate a fake pumpkin to represent that character in our library pumpkin patch.  Make sure to fill out your form and bring your pumpkin to the library starting October 5th.

pumpkins

No REAL pumpkins will be accepted; please use a fake pumpkin.  Here are some tips to keep in mind as you are making your creation.

  • Think of your favorite book and design your pumpkin based on your favorite character and fill out the form on the back
  • Fake pumpkins can be found at the Dollar Tree, Hobby Lobby, Wal Mart, Target, and many other stores.
  • Gather your decorating supplies. Acrylic paints or permanent markers work best. Other options include adding materials such as yarn, buttons, wiggly eyes, etc.
  • Bring your pumpkin and form to the library starting Monday, October 5th.
  • Pumpkins are to be taken home at the end of school on Wednesday, November 18th. If your child needs assistance getting it home please make arrangements.   All pumpkins will be disposed of on November 20th at 3:30 pm.
  • Participation is completely voluntary and this is not a contest.  You will receive a spirit stick and your pumpkin will be famous in the Pink Library!
  • Have fun and be creative.

International Dot Day

Dot Day SkypeDot Day2DotWeekBooks

We celebrated International Dot Day with some great books and awesome experiences.  We connected with other campuses through Skype on Tuesday, and celebrated in other classes throughout the week with the app Quiver and by creating collaborative Dots.  It’s been a great week so far, and we look forward to making our marks this year in the library.

Where Is It Wednesday?

My favorite request today was “Where are the ‘Gator Boys’ chapter books?”  From what I could gather this is a show on Animal Planet; now I feel out of date on my TV shows.  Needless to say, no “Gator Boys” chapter books.  I showed him some nonfiction books about alligators, such as this one:

But, remember he wanted a chapter book.  So, we tried this one:

He read it at a table for a little while, but eventually decided against it.  Then he asked me about Platypus Police Squad on a display.

And that is what he checked out!  Not “Gator Boys” but a great book nonetheless.  I’ll definitely have to touch base and see if he likes it…and I need to brush up on my kid pop culture!

New Series

Calling all Wimpy Kid and Big Nate fans; we have two new series that you’re going to love!  Check out Stick Dog by Tom Watson and Timmy Failure by Stephan Pastis.  Filled with zany plots and cartoons throughout, these series will have you laughing out loud.  Be sure to visit the authors’ web sites and watch the book trailers to learn more.

Chat and Chew

Wow, we had a record number of students for Chat and Chew: 40 4th graders and 28 5th graders joined our lunch time book clubs!  We meet each Monday during 4th and 5th grade lunches; we are kicking off the year with The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom.  I’m can’t wait to spend time reading and discussing this book with these kids as we all get to know one another.  In November, we will Skype with author Christopher Healy as a final connecting activity.  These kids are going to love this book; I am so excited that we can provide these great learning opportunities in the library, and I’m proud of our students for taking advantage of it.
